Carlos and his team are wonderful, we brought our German Shepard for 10 days while were gone for daycare and training we came back and noticed the craziest improvements instantly, our dog was obedient, learned new skills and overall they helped us with every single issue we were having with our pup. At the end of the trip Carlos personally took time out of his day to teach us a few tricks and tips to improve and maintain the skills he had taught our pup.I’ll be coming back for more training as soon as I can to continue to improve my dogs obedience. We are so thrilled with the training that our 8 month old German Shepherd, Caddy received! He completed the 3 week obedience board and train program and we couldn’t be happier! The Obedience Dog Training Club of Waterbury, Inc., now located in Oxford, CT was founded in 1946. The club, run entirely by volunteers, is dedicated to the training of dogs and their handlers both for fun and for competition. We believe that all dogs benefit from obedience training and have helped thousands learn to train their dogs either as a better behaved pet or a highly trained obedience competitor.

For the Pet Dog, our Puppy class is designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. Our Beginner Obedience class (Family Manners) will help students learn to use positive reinforcement to teach basic commands and address common household problems.

Whether you plan to compete or just want to take your dog to that next level of training, our Manners & More class will help you learn the requirements of the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate (CGC) and at the conclusion of the 6 week class, the CGC test will be administered.

We provide all phases of competition training for American Kennel Club (AKC) and Companion Dog Sports Program (CDSP) Events – From Beginner all the way to Utility. We also offer Agility, Rally and Field training.

My dog training journey began with a remarkable German Shepherd Dog, Sirius, who joined our family at the age of 18 months after being released by Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Not only did I get the beautiful Shepherd I had wanted all my life, but a very special one who had been carefully bred and socialized, had lived with a loving puppy raiser family, and been trained by skilled Guiding Eyes trainers. I thought we were getting the best trained dog ever.

But although Sirius was sweet, he often disregarded cues; he ignored me when on leash; he just wouldn’t listen. I was disappointed and frustrated; the close partnership I had visualized wasn’t happening. So I sought help from well established trainers, including German Shepherd “experts”, whose recommendations included equipment such as choke, prong and shock collars, and strategies such as waiting for Sirius to make a mistake for which he would then be punished. I was unwilling to use those strategies; they were in stark contrast to the original purpose of having Sirius join our family. I didn’t get Sirius in order to learn how to punish him or use force to get him to do things. I knew those methods would undermine his confidence, his trust in me and the close relationship we had developed. So I did my best to keep Sirius’ focus when distractions occurred, to avoid problematic situations and continued searching for a way to have a well-behaved dog.

One year later, wherever we went Sirius walked politely at my side on or off leash wearing a regular flat collar. How did it happen? I realized that like many people, I had been putting the cart before the horse. I needed to change not just my training strategies but more importantly, my perspective. I realized the problems with the punishment-based training strategies that had been recommended: they tried to compel compliance through fear of punishment; they focused solely on “making” dogs do something; they would not work when the choke/chain/shock collars were absent; and they would damage our relationship. Instead, the mutual trust and respect in Sirius’ and my relationship became the foundation for a positive training approach, and I found the partnership I had hoped for.

The key to the change, was simply that instead of training to create the partnership I craved, our close relationship created the partnership. With an engaged partner, you can train anything within a dog’s capabilities. The solution was to incorporate our mutually respectful and trusting relationship into training,

Sirius inspired me to study canine training extensively, to shadow trainer mentors, and eventually in 2015 to leave the medical profession to become a full time dog trainer. Sirius peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge in my arms in 2016, but not before teaching me about relationships with our animal companions. Those lessons from Sirius are incorporated into my training philosophy and include mutual respect, trust, forgiveness for mistakes, and a journey filled with adventures, discoveries and a deepening relationship with our dogs.

We love taking our girls to Cassio. We have been going there for years. We currently have a Morkie and Llasa-poo and both love it. It is a joy to see them running in when we drop them off.

Tom is great. We have seen an amazing difference in Maggie since we started her training with him.


When we came to Tom for help, our dog, June, had serious social issues. She would aggressively bark, growl and charge at any strangers who would approach her outside or come into in our home. Her behavior made having guests over nearly impossible. Thankfully June has made nearly a complete 180 after working with Tom. Tom was able to teach us strategic ways of dealing with June's reactions, and through practice and understanding we were able to correct many of her inappropriate behaviors. Now June is able to attend family parties, be pleasant in public spaces and more! Tom Porier is an excellent dog trainer. His dedication to helping his clients reach their desired goals is commendable. I would definitely recommend Camelot Dog Training to anyone struggling with behavior issues or dog training in general!


Tom is the best. He is very informative and really focuses on our areas of concern with our new puppy. He has taught us so much all ready. I just wish we could get the puppy to do things as easily and quickly as Tom can. Its amazing what he can get her to do.

I cannot believe the improvement I’ve seen in my Golden Retriever, Wyatt, after working with Tom and Camelot for such a short time. He’s 105lbs and had hurt me several times knocking me over and dragging me when on the leash, he also was really excitable around people and would jump up on them constantly. Anytime I had to bring him to the vet or the groomer I’d be super anxious and would often hear comments about how it’s great I hadn’t given up yet and that anyone else would have brought him to a shelter. We’ve only been working with Tom for a couple of months and his last vet trip was a night to day difference, he didn’t jump on anyone once and actually sat and stayed still long enough for them to accurately weigh him. Even his walking on leash has improved a great amount and we just started working on that recently. I’m looking forward to being able to bring Wyatt places without being afraid one of us will get hurt and letting him have the fun experiences he deserves.

For those who have been challenged with handling a reactive dog , you understand the mental toll it takes and how isolating and hopeless it can feel . You thought you did everything right by giving your dog so much love and socialization only to now be faced with questions and comments like “ why didn’t you just train your dog ?“ , “ you’re not the alpha to your dog”, “ you shouldn’t be a dog owner” on a regular basis.

I have a 6 year old boxer ( the social , goofy clowns of the dog breeds) . I’ve worked with dogs in the past as a kennel attendant, and grown up with dogs my entire life and never thought I would be in this situation . I struggled to find a trainer whose techniques showed progress which lead to inconsistency, a lot of frustration and doubt . Eventually taking him places like the vet and groomer caused me such extreme anxiety.

When I met Tom , my dog was unapproachable by strangers , including Tom initially. It took a month or so of meeting up , going on walks and practicing techniques at home but I was seeing improvement! Not long after Tom was able to take the leash from me and walk Gus, and we could walk near other people without Gus acting like a total maniac , lunging , barking and snapping. It was like he was a normal (ish) dog . Gus is 6 , so it will be a slow process to break him out of this behavior , but he has improved so much in the last 6 months .. I never thought I would get this far. I still have my work cut out for me but this training has also helped me increase my confidence as a dog owner and learn to trust my dog again. I’m not longer so nervous to take him out on walks because I feel like I’m in control.( Holding back an 80 pound boxer is not an easy task ) .
