4worldlovers: Over the past few years, there has been a terrible disregard for the professional autonomy of those who are licensed mental health professionals, most especially psychiatrists!

About two months ago I took part in an online networking call for licensed mental health professionals. Psychiatrists were overwhelmingly represented. These professionals had terrible stories of tyranny, forced upon them by the medical-industrial complex telling them to prescribe psychopharmaceuticals and oversee their patients’ tolerance to these toxic to the body, mind-altering drugs in 15-minute appointments. The world of psychopharmacology where this became the norm for how psychiatrists practice came about in the 1980s, no longer allowing for longer appointments that included conventional talk therapy for those who practiced psychiatry under the larger insurance providers and university-hospital medical systems of medical delivery.

There are huge problems with this method of delivering mental health care to those with severe mental illness. I saw it first hand while I worked at the Gathering Place, the social club that is attached to the Tri-City Mental Health and Retardation Center in 1993. Now, I want to be very clear that the licensed mental health professionals who worked in the four programs that were housed in the facility in Malden where I worked at the time were loving, caring people who taught me everything I needed to know about how to work with clients with multiple mental health diagnoses, learning how to never take on the client’s anger or upset as a personal matter because it was not personal – it was a matter of the clients own issues involving the mental illnesses that they were dealing with at the time.

However, that job was only granted for a year and then I had to move on, and so I did to work in supportive housing programs in Haverhill and a couple of programs that were then located west of Boston from 1994 to 1996.

It was in those programs that I saw for myself how terribly my clients were treated, one being court-ordered to take intramuscular Prolixin which was causing his lips and fingernails to be blue because of a lack of oxygenation to his body with this forced medication which by the way was doing nothing to lessen the client’s psychotic features from my year as a one-to-one counselor with him. I went to bat for him because I promised his adoptive parents that I was going to figure out a way to get him out of that damaging to him program and into a much more structured program. That did indeed happen and 17 years after I bumped into one of his apartment roommates from that time I worked at the program to find out that my client was no longer in any programs, living in his own apartment with a roommate quite successfully. I can only tell you that hearing that update made it worth my while to get a terrible respiratory infection due to the chronic stress I was under working under a pathologically unstable boss at that time. My then-husband called in my resignation while I was too sick to work since every time I opened my mouth I was coughing endlessly.

I tell this story to allow you all to recognize the fact that I do indeed understand that dream that you had of being able to use your own philolsophies of healing were undermined by a system that was only there to endlessly sell drugs whether or not they truly helped your patients to feel any better. I know that you know that most of these drugs have little to no positive effects while having many side effects. Tardive dyskinesia was one I witnessed many of the older clients of the Gathering Place dealing with during my time working there – a terrible side effect that was never going to be reversed.

I also have learned through much of my own research how damaging yet minimally effective the SSRIs are to help with either depression or anxiety per the decades-old research of Dr. Irving Kirsh of Harvard University with his research replicated by Dr. Walter Brown, of Brown University – further finding out that the National Health Service in Great Britain will only these medications to patients who are diagnosesdwith major depressive disorder having found that they do not work on any patients with lesser forms of depression.
